Speed Dating at the Office? Something that many companies are working through right now is maintaining the same sense of belonging and comradery that was more prevalent back when everyone was in the office full-time. And while we at NKPR are currently exercising a hybrid of working in the office and remotely, we value and are excited for this in-person exchange of positive energy and communication between everybody, as well as the chance to participate in more team activities at the office once again.
Last week, we hosted a fun NKPR Speed Dating event, where our entire team got to spend a few minutes facing each other with fun questions to keep the conversations moving (What is your spirit animal? What’s your go-to karaoke song?), before rotating to the next person. By the end of the exercise, our entire team was smiling, laughing and took away some new fun facts about their peers.
Team building exercises like Speed Dating are simple to organize and fundamental to building increased communication, employee motivation and collaboration, and help to harvest a healthy culture in the workplace.
Socializing and making friends in the workplace is one of the best ways to increase productivity in the virtual, hybrid or in-person workplace. It’s also a great way to build social bridges across departments, help unlock leadership potential and foster creativity from the teams. We’re excited to try more team-bonding activities!
Have you heard the news? Lightspeed Founder & CEO Dax Dasilva has officially launched Age Of Union, a visionary non-profit that will fund critical conservation actions around the world, with a pledge of $40 million! Following the success of Dasilva’s 2019 book release, Age of Union, a guide to inspire today’s changemakers, Dasilva created the alliance to bring together conservationists from around the world and inspire high-impact change.
Age of Union launched five major conservation projects with partners Nature’s Conservancy of Canada (Quebec, Canada), Jungle Keepers (Peru), Canadian Ape Alliance (Democratic Republic of Congo), Kalaweit (Indonesia) and KANPE (Haiti). The conservation projects focus on protecting endangered species, preserving important ecosystems and freshwater reserves, and restoring others through reforestation or agroforestry.
As part of its call to action, Age of Union is producing short documentaries on select projects. Last week saw the premiere of the first film, “We are the St. Lawrence”, produced in partnership with the Nature Conservancy of Canada on October 26th in Montreal at the Ritz Carlton, and October 28th in Toronto at Clio.
“The St. Lawrence River watershed holds 20 percent of the globe’s freshwater reserve, and its estuary is one of the world’s largest and most biodiverse. Sadly, humans have taken this for granted,” says Dasilva. “We dump our waste here and use it as a superhighway for cargo ships when it is also home to wildlife like whales, sturgeons, birds, and much more. We hope with our support of Nature Conservancy of Canada, preservation efforts, and this film, we are able to foster a community of support and respect for these great waters.”
Age of Union and NCC were also joined at the events by Jungle Keepers, a non-profit dedicated to protecting the rainforest in the Peruvian Amazon, for a thought provoking panel discussion on the importance of protecting our environment.
This is such an inspiring and incredible initiative, and we at NKPR are proud to continue to see Dax and his team taking positive action with Age of Union. Visit https://www.ageofunion.com/ to learn more.

The NKPR team put together the best ones for the busy shopper including The Best Beauty and Fashion Gifts Under $100, For The One Who Likes to Splurge, The Best Last-Minute Gifts, and Gifts for an Avid Traveller! An office favourite? Stocking Stuffers (and Hounds Vodka seriously stole the show here)!

Guests also enjoyed breakfast throughout the day with Tim Hortons’ new Breakfast Anytime menu. Have you ever seen a happier face?
Pusateri’s also made an appearance and they’ve exclusively partnered up with celebrity chef Chuck Hughes to develop limited-edition holiday gift baskets with his picks from Pusateri’s (including a few products from his own brand)! There are two boxes available in different sizes (with different price points) with custom artisanal offerings like Pusateri’s Maple Roasted Pecans and Marcona Almonds (Roasted and Salted), and Chuck Hughes’ Balsamic Vinegar and Hot Pepper Spread! These boxes feature some seriously delicious items to keep in your winter pantry, including all the snacks you could ever need for a snow day!

The collection features a highlighting powder, two 5- colour eyeshadow palettes, sparkling lipstick, metallic liquid lipsticks and more! Think of your stocking overflowing with these… yes, please! They are also offering tons of amazing gift sets, great for making gifting a breeze this year.

How will you mark International Women’s Day this year?
For me, the greatest influence begins at home
As long as I can remember, my family has always celebrated International Women’s Day. Every March 8, my father would give my mother a beautiful bouquet of flowers. It started when they first got married before my sister and I were born and has continued to this day. I asked my father once why this particular day was so special that he wanted to honour it with a gift to my mother.
He said it was his way of showing how much he loved, supported and respected my mother and the way she was raising my sister and me to be strong, independent, resourceful women. He felt it was important to mark the occasion of International Women’s Day with a symbolic gesture in celebration of an important event.
Perhaps because he was raised in a female-led household (with just his mom and sister as his father died during World War II) my father has always believed that women are equal and deserving of the same rights, responsibilities and rewards as men. In all the interactions I’ve witnessed my father has had with other people – men and women from all backgrounds and walks of life – I’ve always been struck how respectful, kind, friendly and fair he’s been, without fail.
I realize how lucky I am to have been raised in a family where both my parents believed that two little girls could do anything they dared to dream. They encouraged us to pursue our goals and not let obstacles or challenges deter us. They taught us the importance of giving back to our community and to pay it forward with the same respect that they showed each other and us. Although not perfect, I believe my parents taught my sister and I well.
So in thinking about this year’s International Women’s Day, an annual day when people the world over come together to focus on women’s issues and achievements, it may seem overwhelming to think what one person can possibly do to advance women’s rights towards a more balanced society with 50/50 equality. That’s an ambitious goal! For me, as it’s always been, the road to equality begins at home.
As much as we should change laws, institutions, pay and workplace culture (and we should) the one thing each one of us can do most easily begins at home within our immediate family. When my son was born years ago, I knew I wanted to raise a good man who valued all people as equals. I wanted to raise a man like my father who shared his traits of kindness, compassion and empathy. As I look at my son today, fully grown and starting his career, I feel immense pride for the man he has become.
And I realize that of life’s greatest accomplishments and greatest area of influence, it rests within one’s own family and immediate circle. That’s where the most impact and positive change can occur. And if you do it right, the ripple effect grows bigger and stronger.
So I wish each of you a happy International Women’s Day. Take the time to celebrate the women in your life and remind yourself how each one of us can influence and support those closest to us and in turn, support all of us.
Happy International Women’s Day! What does International Women’s Day mean to you? Tweet me @NatashaNKPR or leave a comment below.
While International Women’s Day is about celebrating the achievements of women who have paved the path for us today, it is also about the women that surround us, and who empower us, everyday. Every woman and man has a role, whether that’s by raising their daughters to be strong and independent (or their sons to be respectful and supportive), or by leading movements to show the world and our leaders what change needs to occur. Today, we recognize and show our appreciation for the women who work to create a better world for all of us.
Some of the NKPR team submitted their responses for what woman, or women, they admire. Take a look at the list below to see what powerful and influential women inspire us everyday:
Kath: Leandra Medine is my forever girl crush, career inspo and life inspirer. She’s passionate, creative, an industry leader (who’s closet I would die to raid), successful and does everything with a side of humour. Also, she prides herself on wearing pants as little as possible…
Fiona: Ellen Degeneres – a trailblazer. One of the funniest comedians of all time. She was shunned in Hollywood after being brave enough to tell the world who she was. In that heroic moment, she let millions of people know that they too could realize their own truth and own it. She told us all that it was ok to be true to yourself. Her career suffered immensely for years, but made probably the most successful comeback of all time – inspiring to everyone, wants to only do good in the world and for people to be kind to one another. Through her show, she arranges to help families overcoming obstacles, arranging hundreds of thousands of dollars to various charities and makes serious differences in ordinary people’s lives. She is absolutely incredible in my eyes.
Rebecca: I am inspired every day by my mamas – for balancing work-life and home-life, making family a priority, raising good, smart children and for always being there for anyone who needs them. It might sound cheesy, but both of my mamas have the ability to always get it all done and it’s something I truly admire.
Tiffany: As a little girl growing up I was obsessed with the Spice Girls, not only because I loved pretending to be Posh Spice when I sang song to “Wannabe”, but because the Spice Girls enforced the notion of “Girl Power” that stuck with me from a very young age and still sticks with me today. The Spice Girls sent out a message of “girls can do anything” and they can! Stemming from my love for the Spice Girls, today I’m truly inspired by Victoria Beckham. Throughout the past two decades she has always been a powerful leader, an example of a SUPER successful female entrepreneur, a trail blazer, and on top of all of her accomplishments she’s a mother, which I find truly inspirational and someone I aspire to be like. Plus, I love her style. 😉
Mel: Dr. Leena Augimeri, my mom! She is the Director of SNAP® Scientific and Program Development & Centre for Children Committing Offences – Child Development Institute and also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto. She specializes in working with children under 12 in trouble with the law. She is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of tomorrow’s leaders, with a special focus on children’s mental health. And she’s an absolutely amazing mom!
Bunmi: Mine is Harriet Tubman. More people should know about Harriet Tubman. I did a project on her in grade 4; I think it was life-changing. She was strong, principled, powerful and resourceful against all odds. She was a survivor. She has been my hero ever since.

NKPR 26 Hours of Kindness: Spreading Love on Valentine’s Day
Building on the success of the NKPR 26 Hours of Kindness holiday edition, we’re excited to announce that on February 14, 2018, NKPR will hold the third annual 26 hours of Kindness on Valentine’s day!!
An NKPR tradition, the 26 Hours of Kindness first launched during the Christmas season – and included random acts of kindness, surprise and delights, caroling, community dinner programs, essentials drive and more.
We made the decision to move the initiative to Valentine’s as a way to reconnect with the day in a meaningful way and to celebrate what love is all about: showing compassion for others, spending time together and giving ourselves.
With February being the coldest time of year, and this year being one of the coldest, the NKPR 26 Hours of Kindness will focus on supporting programs that provide food, a safe warm space and a kind word to those most in need.
Award season is amongst us! We’re well under way as the Golden Globes recently passed, giving us a sneak peak at what will be trending on the red carpet this year. We’ve pulled some of our favourite items so you can stay on-trend and rock these looks at your own events!
We saw a lot of gorgeous earrings drawing attention to some of the hottest celebrities so far this month. Statement earrings are a great alternative for adding drama to an otherwise tame outfit. Check out these bold and beautiful Swarovski earrings that will help you glam up for any event (from left to right):
Nothing is as classic as a beautiful red lip on the red carpet. These lipsticks come in multiple shades, including, of course, a matte lipstick to ensure full and lasting coverage (completely necessary for a long night)! Take a look at which lipsticks you should bring for your next night out (from left to right):
A vibrant or dark contrasting lip has often been paired with a sleek and elegant up-do! With any hairstyle, the products you use are crucial to ensure smooth strands, full body, and a soft hold! These new OGX Beauty Stylers are perfect for all your hair needs before a big event (from left to right):
2018 is just around the corner and with each new year comes the new found motivation to fulfill newly realized (or sadly forgotten) goals. Although many resolutions are disregarded by Valentines Day, we gladly share some of our own with you!
“Cut back on sugar and keep looking forward.”
“Better prioritize my time – that it’s just as important to carve out time for myself as it is to say ‘yes’ to everything I’m asked of, and that that’s not me being selfish, but me understanding what I need to be a properly functioning human!”
“Stop buying coffee and drink more water!”
“Brush up on my Italian!”
“Pet more dogs.”
“Use my entire Class Pass each month. I have 10 classes that I pay for per month, and I get lazy, don’t use them and they expire, which is a waste.”
“Learn a new language — I really want to learn Spanish!”
“Take dance lessons and have more fun!”
“Change my morning routine so I don’t push snooze on average 10 times.”
“Try a new spot (food/bar/etc) once a week with my friends. That’s probably not realistic, or good for my wallet, so maybe once a month is a better starting point.”
“Stay present and work towards living in the moment more.”
“Cut-out sugar (following the holiday chocolate binge) and to take a class on digital marketing.”
What are your resolutions? Comment or tweet us (@natashankpr) and let us know! 🙂
